Foundation 3: Rock Phosphate

Rock Phosphate is a sedimentary rock rich in phosphate minerals, serving as a critical raw material for agriculture and various industries. Around 90% of global rock phosphate production is used to manufacture fertilisers, vital for enhancing soil fertility and supporting crop growth. Phosphate content, measured as P₂O₅, ranges from 4% to 20%, depending on the grade of the rock.
Extraction and Processing
Rock Phosphate is mined from ancient marine deposits. After extraction, the rock is crushed, washed, and converted into a slurry. This slurry undergoes beneficiation, where fatty acids render Calcium Phosphate hydrophobic, allowing it to be separated from impurities. The processed material is then solubilised to produce wet-process Phosphoric Acid or smelted to create elemental Phosphorus, both essential for fertiliser production.
Composition and Properties
Rock Phosphate primarily contains Phosphorus (P₂O₅), alongside Calcium Oxide (CaO), Silica (SiO₂), Sulphate (SO₃), Fluoride (F), iron (Fe₂O₃), Aluminium Oxide (R₂O₃), and other minerals. This unique composition makes it valuable for applications requiring high phosphorus content.
Applications and Uses
In agriculture, Rock Phosphate is used to produce fertilisers such as Single Superphosphate (SSP), Monoammonium Phosphate (MAP), and Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), essential for plant root development, flowering, and growth. Beyond agriculture, it is used in animal feed, food preservatives, pharmaceuticals, anti-corrosion agents, and water treatment.
Global Production and Trade
Major producers include China, Morocco, the United States, and Russia, with Morocco and Western Sahara holding over 70% of known, accessible reserves. Major importers, such as India, the EU, and Brazil, rely heavily on these reserves to support their agricultural sectors.
Environmental Impact
The use of Rock Phosphate contributes to water pollution through agricultural runoff, which accounts for 20–30% of phosphorus in rivers, and wastewater discharge from treatment plants, responsible for 60–80%. These discharges lead to eutrophication, harming aquatic ecosystems. Sustainable management, including minimising runoff and recycling phosphorus, is essential to mitigate environmental impacts and preserve this critical resource.
